Netball
Each Key Stage 2 year group take part for half a term (Autumn).
In the first half term:
- Year 3 are taught ball skills of throwing and catching which is building on Key Stage 1 lessons. We introduce the bounce pass and chest pass which are used in netball games. We explore moving around a netball court and start to discuss footwork . We do this with a variety of fun activities which include small invasion games of ball passing (3 v 3) and they begin to learn tactical skills when playing a team game.
- Year 5 practise skills emphasising important rules needed for the game. Small games are played of High 5 netball during lessons and pupils become more aware of their positioning. At the end of the half term we play a High 5 mini tournament.
In the second half of the term:
- In Year 4 the extended teaching comprises further practise of ball skills. Invasion games are played which are more netball based in that we begin to introduce some basic rules of the game, such as not moving with the ball. Other skills we learn are shooting into the net, dodging and marking, and finding spaces.
- Year 6 pupils' skills become more developed; shoulder passes and faster, more accurate, throwing, catching and passing are expected. The children play 7-a-side netball and are encouraged to try all the positions, defensive and attacking.
Pupils are encouraged to attend Netball Club from Years 4-6 - see 'Clubs Netball' for more information.
