As of September 2020, the Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019, make Relationships Education compulsory for all pupils receiving primary education. This statutory obligation extends to independent schools.
Relationships Education is statutory and defined as teaching the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults.
Health Education (physical health and mental wellbeing) is non-statutory for Independent Schools, however, we at Airthrie feel that teaching children how to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing, to recognise issues in themselves and others, and to seek support as early as possible when issues arise, is a valuable skill.
Our aim is for our pupils to translate what they are taught into forming positive beliefs, values and attitudes. We sit Relationships Education alongside the essential understanding of how to be healthy, and place mental wellbeing at the centre of our teaching.
At Airthrie, rather than being taught as a separate subject, Relationships Education is embedded into the framework of Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE Ed) and integrated across subjects as part of our broad and balanced curriculum. It also is inherent within the wider context of our school values:
