Thetford’s Harvest Loaf

Mr Jeremy Sayers, our multi-talented Groundsman, Builder and Carpenter demonstrated to the pupils in Thetford Forest how to make a traditional Wheat-sheaf Harvest Festival Loaf.  Jeremy, who in a former life had been a Master Baker, first showed pupils how to cut and roll the dough into balls of differing sizes, then to form the ears of wheat, the stalks and other component parts of the Loaf.

The pupils then dusted the tables with flour and rolled out the dough to form all the parts of a companion loaf, whilst the principles of the traditional harvest were explained by Mrs Sullivan. The two loaves were baked by the cooks and today the bread was served up as a part of the harvest lunch – particularly enjoyed by those who could say “We made that!”
