Language skills in the early years
If we can encourage children to enjoy learning language skills and to feel confident about using them, they will have a firm foundation on which to base their literacy development. Children start school with considerable knowledge of language. This existing knowledge is then built on at school through interaction with the teacher and other children. Our aim is that children should be independent readers and writers who are not only competent in their use of language, but who also enjoy speaking, listening, reading and writing.
From the beginning, in the Nursery and during the early years of school, children should have opportunities to choose what to write and they need to know that their letter shapes and spellings are accepted, encouraged and valued.
