During only the second full week of term Airthrie's Girls' Hockey team played in a very successful match against Cheltenham College B/C. This was only the second time that this fixture had been arranged and it proved very positive for all concerned.
The match started at a quick pace and Sophie was soon taking charge of the midfield. This enabled Esmee to move into the centre forward position and Sachi to play on the left wing. This was beginning to pay dividends as our attack was working together well with good link-up play between the midfield and the wings. This immediately gave the side much needed width and It was from one of these attacks that Sophie found herself free in the circle with time to shoot past the opposition goal keeper.
The Airthrie defence was standing up confidently to any attacks from the College. Emma and Amy kept their shape efficiently, preventing Charlotte from being called to make any saves in the Airthrie goal.
The match was played in four quarters and by the end of the first section it was clear that the Airthrie girls were the stronger team. Eva, playing her first hockey match, made great progress down the right wing as Esmee and Sophie dominated the centre of the pitch. Goals soon followed as all the forwards managed to get on the score sheet. Airthrie were leading by 4 goals to nil by this time.
By the final quarter, Mr Wright swapped the defence and attack to give the girls some variety. Amy took to the midfield role with great enthusiasm as did Emma in her role in the forward line. It was at this stage that the team showed most strength as players were performing out of position yet still managing to dominate.
Three goals followed and an extremely enjoyable afternoon ended with the score: Cheltenham College (B/C) 0 Airthrie 7.
This was an excellent performance and gave the girls so much confidence for the term ahead.
Well done, everybody!
The school would like to thank all those parents who gave the time to help with transport and to give the girls much needed support.
