Cross Country Race 110th October 2017

The first Cross Country race of the season took place at Newlands Park, Southam Lane last week and the turnout by all schools was exceptional. This was my first experience representing Airthrie School and I was extremely proud of all of the children.

Firstly, we would like to thank all participants and parents for supporting and helping with transport; it is greatly appreciated and, with Race 2 this week, we are looking forward to seeing you all again.

We took four girls and four boys to the meet which was a new venue for this year. The girls performed really well with Freya coming 43rd which I understand is a Personal Best, Emma ran her very close indeed (46th) and it was great to see them finish almost together.

Georgina set herself a target of achieving 94th place which would be a personal best. However, she actually smashed this with 55th place and an amazing sprint finish showing all her hard work in clubs and sports is paying off. Arabella also ran very determinedly and produced an exceptional 68th place in a field with an awful lot of Year 6 children and very strong runners. The girls performed tremendously well and can be proud of their performance.

The effort displayed by the boys was fantastic. We fielded by far and away the most inexperienced and youthful team of the event and they did themselves proud.

We had to set out a strategy for our three Year 3 boys as they were surrounded by Year 6 students but they stuck to the plan and apart from a little fall all made a safe and effective start. The boys' race ran at an extremely fast pace and it never let up - the top 50 boys had stretched the field enormously by the half-way stage.

For a Year 3 pupil, Archie ran a fantastic 79th place and even had time to give us a wave half way round!

Hayden, in his first ever Cross Country race, came in 143rd. He ran at a very good pace throughout and is looking forward to the next race on Thursday.

Benjamin and Ben ran together for almost the whole race and supported each other right to the very end. What a great show of sportsmanship and togetherness and they can be hugely proud of their efforts.

I believe that taking such a young team to such a big event was a wonderful opportunity for these boys - they behaved and applied themselves so well.

Congratulations to all involved and we are greatly looking forward to Race 2.
