Last week, the Airthrie Cricket season began with a match against Rendcomb College, B Team.
The boys only had the opportunity of one coaching session during the first week of term. Consequently, they had not played together before as a team. Our captain, George Hobbs. won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Due to accurate bowling from Edward Craske, Charlie Watkins, George Hobbs and Ben Shaw, Rendcomb found it difficult to score runs. In addition, early wickets were taken by all of the bowlers. Airthrie's fielding was not tested although Edward worked neatly behind the stumps as wicket-keeper. Rendcomb finished their innings with a negative score of 3 runs.
Airthrie started their innings knowing that the priority should be to bat sensibly and lose as few wickets as possible. Edward and Wolfie Cross were the first pair to bat, scoring 19 runs (loss of 1 wicket). Pradyun Iyer and Sam Gilder took the score up to +34 (loss of 1 wicket). Dylan Watts-Jones and Ben took the score on to 42 and Airthrie's final pair, Charlie and George, added a further 13 runs.
Airthrie's final batting total was positive 55.
This was a very successful opening match to the season which lays the foundations for the matches ahead. Airthrie won by 58 runs.
