In the Nursery (Acorn) and Reception (Willow), our youngest pupils are taught in four bright, interlinking classrooms which open immediately onto the garden. We know that the children love being out of doors so, weather permitting, we have outdoor as well as indoor classrooms (which also fulfills the requirements of the EYFS).
We wish the children to come to school happily and we work closely with parents to ensure the right approach for each individual child. Some children may start gradually and build up their time with us on a completely flexible programme, following one or two taster sessions, whilst other children may come to us on a full-time arrangement immediately.
Our environment has strong pastoral care in a 'homely' setting as well as offering a wealth of stimulating activities. Our focus is on stimulation, enjoyment and variety whilst learning takes place. Even at the age of three we introduce French, Music, Drama, Sport and Art over the five days of the week, taught by specialist teachers, giving an additional dimension to the Early Years curriculum. Every day is different and we recognise the need to adapt our plans according to children's daily news and interests.
In the Nursery there is regular one-to-one child/adult activity and in their final pre-school months the children are prepared for their next educational move to full-time school. Pupils join Reception at 4 to 5 years of age and continue to follow the EYFS Curriculum for the duration of that year.
Throughout EYFS, Airthrie School accepts the Government Nursery Education Grant (free for 3 and 4 year olds) which covers the cost of the first 15 hours per week of education for pupils aged 3 to 5 years old.
